Common questions
What is the difference between OEM and ODM manufacturing?
Under an OEM arrangement, the brand owns the product design and the manufacturer builds to that design. The brand controls specification and sells under its own name. Under an ODM arrangement, the manufacturer handles design and development as well as production, and the brand selects from or adapts what the manufacturer has developed. OEM suits a brand with its own engineering team and a settled design. ODM suits a brand that wants to enter a category quickly without building that capability first. VOEPL works both ways.
What should a brand check before appointing a contract manufacturer in India?
Six things carry most of the weight. First, certification: ISO 9001 for quality systems, BIS registration for the product category, and BEE registration where energy labelling applies. Second, in-house testing, because a manufacturer that tests its own output catches defects before you do. Third, backward integration, since every component bought in from outside is a lead time and a quality variable outside your control. Fourth, category experience in your specific product, not manufacturing in general. Fifth, financial stability, which is easier to verify with a listed company because the filings are public. Sixth, capacity headroom, so growth does not require requalifying a new supplier.
What is backward integration in appliance manufacturing?
Backward integration means making components in-house instead of buying them from suppliers. For an appliance manufacturer that typically covers plastic injection moulding, sheet metal work, powder coating, copper tubing, heat exchangers, pressure die casting, CNC machining and wire harnessing. It matters to a buyer for three reasons: fewer external dependencies means fewer things that can delay an order, component quality is controlled rather than inspected on arrival, and cost is more predictable because it is less exposed to supplier pricing. VOEPL produces all of the above in-house.
What does VOEPL manufacture?
Air conditioners including indoor and outdoor units, deep freezers, commercial refrigeration, water dispensers, water heaters, semi-automatic washing machines, refrigeration compressors and LED lighting. VOEPL also provides electronics manufacturing services. Across those categories the company supports more than 20 product lines, manufacturing either to a customer's design or designing the product outright.
What testing does VOEPL carry out in-house?
VOEPL operates NABL-accredited laboratories covering electrical, HVAC, mechanical, photometry, wire harness, safety, life and performance testing. That includes EMC and ESD testing, surge testing, high voltage and insulation resistance testing, temperature rise testing, psychrometric testing for air conditioning products, and photometric measurement to IS 16102 for lighting. Testing is available to external customers as well as for products made here.
Which certifications does VOEPL hold?
ISO 9001:2015 for quality management, certification and registration with the Bureau of Indian Standards, registration with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, and NABL accreditation for its laboratories.
Where are VOEPL's manufacturing facilities?
VOEPL operates 10+ manufacturing facilities and 1.5 million sq.ft. total manufacturing area. The main cluster is in Nashik, Maharashtra, with additional facilities in Chennai and Sanand.
